• European Modernism and the Body
    2016-2017 course

Nell’ambito del Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Lingue, Letterature Comparate e Traduzione Internazionale (LM-64), European Modernism Studies è il primo corso curricolare in lingua inglese sul modernismo europeo insegnato in un ateneo italiano. Finanziato dall’Università degli Studi di Perugia attraverso il programma relativo ai Visiting Professor e coordinato dal Centre for European Modernism Studies, EMS è tenuto da un visiting professor che cambia annualmente.



Literature and the body. This course explores the representations of the body against the background of European Modernism. By referring to ground-breaking aesthetic theories, the course investigates the body as a “contested site” that can be read either as an “auxiliary to the self, a vehicle or object that houses the mind or the soul”. Attention will be paid to Pirandello’s and Kafka’s treatment of the body respectively in the Notebooks of Serafino Gubbio operator and the Short Stories.

Please note that a course-pack with all the critical readings will be distributed at the beginning of the course. Kafka’s stories and Pirandello’s novelmust be read entirely.
